Italian marble is the defining material of luxury interiors worldwide — and nowhere more so than in Dubai, where discerning clients expect nothing less than authentic stone from the Apuan Alps. But not all Italian marble is created equal. Understanding the differences between Carrara, Calacatta, and Statuario is essential for making the right choice.
The Apuan Alps: Where It All Begins
All three marbles originate from the same mountain range in Tuscany — the Apuan Alps, near the city of Carrara. These quarries have supplied marble for over 2,000 years, from Michelangelo's David to contemporary luxury residences in Dubai. The geological conditions that created these stones are unique: each quarry produces marble with distinct characteristics that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
Carrara Marble
Carrara is the most abundant and widely known Italian marble. It features a soft grey-white base with delicate, feathery grey veining. It's elegant without being ostentatious — the marble of choice for classical Italian architecture and everyday luxury.
Best applications: Bathroom walls and floors, kitchen countertops (with proper sealing), flooring in high-traffic areas, feature walls. Carrara's subtle veining works beautifully in both contemporary and classical settings.
Price range in Dubai: AED 350–800 per square metre (installed), depending on grade and thickness.
In Italian Opera's Roma Collection, Carrara marble forms the foundation of classical spaces — paired with architectural mouldings and warm lighting to create rooms of timeless authority.
Calacatta Marble
Calacatta is rarer and more dramatic than Carrara. It features a warmer, brighter white base with bold, distinctive veining in gold, grey, or sometimes green tones. Each slab is unique — and the best slabs are works of art in themselves.
Best applications: Statement kitchen islands, feature walls, fireplace surrounds, vanity tops, book-matched installations. Calacatta demands to be the focal point of a room.
Price range in Dubai: AED 1,200–3,500 per square metre (installed). Premium slabs with exceptional veining can exceed AED 5,000.
Calacatta is the signature material of our Venezia Collection, where its dramatic veining complements Murano glass and rich textiles for opulent, theatrical spaces.
Statuario Marble
Statuario is the rarest and most prestigious of the three. It combines the bright white base of Calacatta with dramatic, high-contrast grey veining that creates a sense of movement and depth. Statuario was Michelangelo's preferred marble — and it remains the ultimate expression of Italian stone craftsmanship.
Best applications: Grand entrance halls, book-matched feature walls, statement floors, luxury bathrooms. Statuario is reserved for spaces where the marble itself is the design statement.
Price range in Dubai: AED 2,500–6,000+ per square metre (installed). Exceptional slabs are priced individually.
How to Tell Them Apart
Background colour: Carrara has a slightly grey-blue undertone. Calacatta and Statuario are warmer, brighter white.
Veining: Carrara's veining is fine and feathery. Calacatta's is bold with warm gold tones. Statuario's is dramatic with high-contrast grey.
Rarity: Carrara is abundant. Calacatta is scarce. Statuario is genuinely rare — most quarries produce limited quantities annually.
Price: Carrara is the entry point for Italian marble. Calacatta is 3–5× more expensive. Statuario can be 5–10× the cost of standard Carrara.
Why Source Directly from Italy?
Dubai's marble market is flooded with imitations — Chinese-quarried stone marketed as "Carrara type" or "Calacatta look." These alternatives may superficially resemble Italian marble, but they lack the geological properties that make authentic Italian stone unique: its translucency, its warmth to the touch, its ability to age gracefully over decades.
At Italian Opera, our Eccellenza and Opera Prima tiers source marble directly from quarries in the Apuan Alps. We select individual slabs, manage shipping and customs, and ensure every piece that arrives in Dubai is certified authentic Italian marble.
Caring for Italian Marble in Dubai's Climate
Dubai's heat and humidity require specific care for natural marble. Regular sealing (annually for countertops, every 2–3 years for floors), immediate cleaning of acidic spills, and professional polishing every 3–5 years will keep Italian marble looking pristine for generations.
